Sentient Concrete

Carnegie Mellon University

Role: Electronics Engineer(Research Assistant)

The research explored interactions between material form and its embedded electromechanical controls.
I worked on controlling and selecting the embedded material.

Summary

Parametrically designed concrete were painted with thermochormic paint and embedded with heating elements that responded to electromechanical controls by changing colour. I worked on determining the optimum heating material to be used, controlling them and the process of embedment. The final panel was part of the Designing The Computational Image / Imaging Computational Design exhibition.

Nichrome Prototypes

This phase of the project called for quick prototyping. Various arrangements of the nichrome wires and embedding techniques were tested. Some slabs caused the circuit to heat inadequately or fail altogether. The power needed, the number of wires possible and the optimum length of wires were approximated.
